Dear High Profit Writer,

I remember it vividly.

After graduating Summa Cum Laude from St. Cloud State University I was hot stuff.

Mucho hot.

Hot Tamale hot.

Yup. I was gonna change the world with all the brilliant musings I was about to bestow upon it. Editors and publishers would surely beat a path to my door.

After all. I was brilliant, articulate, and a bunch of other multi-syllabled words.

Then one day I stumbled upon a writing mentor.

Not having even the remotest idea what I was about to get in to, (I didn't figure I needed to learn how to draft an effective query let alone write) I bit the bullet, cut a fat check, and held my breath. I figured something else had to be standing in the way of my writing success. (If you'll remember, after all, I was brilliant.) :)

I was in Nirvana. Digging through every astoundingly super, A+ term paper I could find, I slowly culled the best of the best, attached them (as a .pdf file, of course... I'd hate to have those little gems “stolen”) to an e-mail to this person who would now guide my writing career.

I whipped up a quick e-mail message and waited for my dear mentor to recognize what the rest of the entire publishing world most certainly missed.

And I waited.

And waited.

And waited some more.

Finally the fateful e-mail arrived.

“Beth,” it said, “I can tell that you're going to be an astounding writer.”

My chest puffed out. Then it instantly deflated.

The message continued, “Your writing pretty much sucks. But your e-mail... you've got some great writing in that e-mail.”

I was crushed. I didn't know how I would continue our relationship.

How could I... after spending thousands and thousands of dollars on a college education be unfit to enter the world of freelance writing?
